If you are using Google to check your keyword ranking, than you are dead wrong. DEAD - WRONG. Google's algorithm ranks searches in accordance with content that is fresh, relevant, original and authoritative; but, Google also ranks searches that reflect the tendencies of one's preferences. In other words, if you are searching for air conditioners, and you have clicked the same air conditioner company a few times each week, than most likely that search result is going to appear high on Google's first page. If you "like" a pet groomer on Facebook from your local area, than that groomer's website will most likely appear when searching for local pet groomers. And, if you are constantly Google'ing your own keyword day-in and day-out whilst clicking your own website, than I can guarantee Google is ranking your own site favorably in your searches alone. And yes, this occurs even when you clear your history and cache.
The tool you should be using to do a targeted keyword search is: Startpage.com. Startpage lists Google's search results for the entire United States notwithstanding the activities of the user. So, if you operate a horse riding service in Salem NJ, Google: "horse riding nj" to determine how well you are ranking against your competitors. That keyword gets typed into Google 6,600 times a month, and is obviously extremely viable. I gathered this information by using Google Adword Tool.
Now, if you wish to check the status of multiple keywords, here is an excellent free service at: smallseotools.com. Here you can check several keywords all at once, all in the interest of monitoring your Google success.
